Jessamyn, I hope you remember me from your Seattle and Oddstock days ... anyway, I just checked in and discovered your Dubai trip, my partner Lisa and I lived in Dubai for two years (December 2004- Jan 2007) and I'd love to advise on your visit, if you're interested ... also, Lisa has a photo gallery up at www.barakaphotos.com, not really representative of Dubai but some stuff you might not see elsewhere.

About dress, I really don't think you should worry about it, it's a little tasteless to go out there on the street in your thong and nothing else, but it's been done ... anything else is acceptable, in various measures, you'll see.
Best,
Tom

Bruneau Dunes in Idaho is completely walk-on-able because they are wind-created.
They also have a nice campground.

(In case you were looking for more sand dunes.)

My experience in Amman, Jordan in 2001 was as you described--I was fully accepted as a Western woman, etc, and treated accordingly, but there was also a certain level of purely visual attention which was hard to take after a while. I had a dark, simple pashmina-style scarf (useful for traveling anyway, makes a good pillow) which I would put over my red hair when I needed a break for a while. Just a tip.
