Jack's Daily Excerpt: We got our first real taste of Alaska weather today. I go out on the deck to heave a snowball at the window by Jessamyn and Tom, and I almost fall on my ass. The deck is slick, and I start grandpa walking, sliding instead of stepping - schlepping, I think it's called. A little later I see a bunch of pre-teen rowdies running around on the deck, and I imagine one losing control, sliding into the rail and flipping over to their death. It turns out that this is one of those you're-an-adult-now fears, not only because there's no way these kids are going to lose control, even on the ultra-slick snow-covered deck, but there's the fact that even if one did, they wouldn't hit the rail high enough to flip over the side. They might get a fat lip or a lost tooth at worst, but they're simply not tall enough to make an out-of-control flip overboard. That's not to say I shouldn't fear for myself, which I do.
